happy hair, clear skin

i have had a ton of clients asking about acne safe hair styling products lately so decided to write a quick post about what we’ve found so far. i found a couple of promising brands via an article written by teen vogue on acne safe hair products. you can check out the article here.

the tricky thing about hair products is that even when they contain safe ingredients, they are more likely to be cloggy because of their intended use. these products are designed to stay in your hair through sweat, humidity, working, twerking, etcetera. while it’s great that a product can withstand all of this it can also be making it travel from your hair on to your face and body, causing breakouts.

whether you are using an sS approved product or experimenting with something that looks safe, here are a few helpful tips to prevent hair induced breakouts.

  1. make sure to change your pillowcases! use one side of the pillow, flip it the next day to use a clean side, then switch your case and repeat.
  2. cleanse + tone into your hairline and behind your ears! these are often neglected parts of the face that only get washed when we shampoo. use your facial cleanser and toner to prevent buildup and make sure you are rinsing shampoo, conditioner, and facial cleanser thoroughly from these areas.
  3. never touch your face after touching your hair! when i’m getting ready for the day i do my hair, then wash my hands using acne safe soap and THEN do my makeup etcetera. be mindful of this throughout the day as well.
  4. having your hair tied back off of your face and using no product is your best bet. this list should be used as a reference for what products to use if you must for a hot date or a wedding. on the day to day we prefer that you aren’t using styling products at all. (or at least until you are completely clear, then can introduce a hair product (or other variable, one at a time for at least a month) to isolate any new breakouts to it).
  5. manufacturers often times will change ingredient lists without announcing it so make sure to check the ingredients each time you refill. tip: a change in formulation is often accompanied by packaging changes!

mineral foundation makeup conversion chart

Aside

hey sS’ers, we’ve finally been able to get enough real-life people in to accurately see which colors look best on our former colorescience users.  below is a chart that we’ve made up, we hope that this makes it easier for you to convert to our new youngblood and illuminare makeup lines.

there are several more shades in the youngblood line than the colorescience (which is great!).  for example, if you used to be ‘all even’ but that was a bit dark, ‘barely beige’ might be a better fit.  or, if ‘all even’ was too yellow, then ‘rose beige’ would probably work out.

of course, the best way to color match is to come in and try out the colors in real life. we recommend coming in early and testing colors before your appointment (skin is often redder than it normally would be after extractions and/or peels, so it’s harder to get the right match). also, if you can come in the daytime (when the sun is still out!) that would be ideal.

we’ll update this chart as we get feedback from more clients, but it’s a great place to start when you’re ready to switch over to youngblood or illuminare.

new clogger alert: argan oil

Arganbad news, sSers, vivant labs has confirmed that argan oil (sometimes called argania spinosa in ingredients lists) is a certified pore-clogger. argan oil has gained popularity in cosmetics over the past couple of years — especially in some of the higher-end brands — so make sure you check your labels.

we’ve updated the comedogenic list to include both argan oil and argania spinosa, so if you keep a copy of the list on your phone or in your purse, it’s time to trade up for the new one. as always, keep in mind that it’s an evolving list. we do our best to include the latest research, but since new ingredients are invented everyday it will never be fully complete.

so, do your due diligence and check those labels, but also make sure you’re listening to your skin. if you start using a new product and start breaking out, stop using it (even if the ingredients look safe). there a plenty of acne-safe products out there, but sometimes it just takes a little effort to separate the wheat from the chaff.

alima blush

after nearly a year of searching, we’ve finally found a line of blushes and bronzers that are totally acne-safe. alima pure cosmetics, based out of portland, oregon, formulates makeup that is free of toxic chemicals, irritants, or preservatives, and we’re so happy to be able to sell their blushes and bronzers.

we are stocking four bronzers and seven carefully-chosen colors of blush and that will flatter every skin tone. you can pick some up the next time you stop by sS, or order them online (current clients can pick them here, everyone else can find them here). we’ve had a great time playing around with these colors, and hope that you guys love them — we’re confident that we have a color for every sSer.
